Install ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala)
In the spirit of "Trust, Teamwork and Transparency," please use the reply form below if you see any additions to the image that you think should be considered, or deletions to the process below that should be considered.

- wireless:
- enter building network key
- keyring: NO password/unsafe storage
- through Terminal:
- ask for list of updates: "sudo apt-get update"
- update system: "sudo apt-get upgrade"
- enable firewall: "sudo ufw enable"
- install different wireless driver
- restart
- Add/Remove:
- Audacity, Basket Notes, Cheese, Inkscape, java, java plugin, KTouch, Tux Typing, ubuntu restricted extras.
- restart
- Software added via System > Administration > Synaptic:
- skype
- afterwards launch skype > options > sound devices > and uncheck , "allow skype to automatically..."
- libmp3lame0
- Install from downloaded packages:
- Adobe Flash, Adobe Reader, Vernier (drivers & vst Logger Pro), Xmind
- Install ActivInspire
- System > Administration > Software Sources > Third-Party, add:
- deb http://activsoftware.co.uk/linux/repos/ubuntu karmic oss non-oss
- import key: save to desktop prior to importing as key.txt
- Be sure to RELOAD when option is given
- Then, open Synaptic and run a search for "activ"Check all of the "activ" items except for the language packages... and install.
- Launch Activstudio and enter username, password and the serial code* Be sure to then click on OK (do NOT Run Personal Edition)
- Be sure to find the activstudio serial code off of a disc at your school or from www.prometheanplanet.com
- While there, click on the Updates tab and uncheck "check for updates"
- restart
- Firefox (Internet Browser):
- make icon on panel
- set homepage: http://discovery.aps.k12.co.us
- view > toolbars > uncheck bookmark toolbar
- under security > uncheck remember passwords
- remove search engines from dropdown box
- check "close downloads when finished."
- make sure it is set to save downloads to "Desktop"
- Consider adding this Google Safe Lock as another layer of protection against stumblers.
- Panel(s):
- preferences 1 workspace
- move applications and trash icon to top bar
- remove bottom toolbar
- lock trash can and application icons
- Open Office (presentation, spreadsheets, word processor):
- Set default save as .doc, .ppt, .xls (Tools, Options, Load/Save, General)
- uncheck "Warn when no saving in ODF format"
- Open GIMP > Edit > Preference > Theme: set to small icons
- Pull toolbar to bottom of screen
- Themes: Add wallpaper and Dust theme
- Main Menu > Preferences:
- Menu: uncheck unneeded programs
- sounds: turn off system sounds and error sound
- Starup Applications: uncheck > bluetooth manager, evolution alarm notifier, gnome login sound, gnome login splash, iTaLC, remote desktop, update notifier
- system >preferences:
- power management > uncheck: reduce backlight brightness, dim display when idle. shutdown when power button is pressed, suspend when lid is closed.
- system > administration
- update manager settings (uncheck daily updates)
- uncheck projector warning (right-click promethean icon choose projector)
- Configure "startup manager" to 0 seconds
- Clean:
- empty trash
- places
